Security agents shot down another bomber in Borno



Nigeria - The Borno Police Command on Saturday confirmed the killing of another suspected suicide bomber by security agents after he tried to gain entry into the Custom House Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp along Maiduguri-Gamboru/Ngala road.

Black Axe mafia gang suspects arrested in police raids across Italy



More than 20 alleged members of a feared Nigerian mafia gang called the Black Axe have been rounded up during raids in Italy.
The suspects are accused of being involved in a catalogue of criminal activities, from prostitution and protection rackets through to drug dealing and human trafficking.

WHO declares Zika Virus Emergency over

 The mosquito-borne Zika virus will no longer be treated as an international medical emergency, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared.
By lifting its nine-month-old declaration, the UN's health agency is acknowledging that Zika is here to stay.
The infection has been linked to severe birth defects in almost 30 countries.

At a concert in San Jose for his Saint Pablo Tour, the hip-hop star made a lengthy speech on issues such as racism, immigration and the possibility of him running for president in 2020.
"I told you I didn't vote. But what I didn't tell you is that if I had voted, I would have voted on Trump," West said, to jeers from the audience.

The Saudi-led military coalition has declared a 48-hour ceasefire in Yemen after the beleaguered government agreed to a US peace plan.
Saudi news agency SPA issued a statement from the coalition on Saturday, which warned Houthi rebels to allow humanitarian aid into loyalist cities.
The Yemen government had previously rejected a plan proposed by US Secretary of State John Kerry earlier this week, believing it would undermine its authority.

The images broadcast on North Korean state television KRT show the country's supreme leader taking a keen interest as the artillery unit fired a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) at an undisclosed location in the secretive state.

Nigerian footballer executed in Singapore for drug trafficking

The Presidency yesterday lamented the execution of a Nigerian footballer, Chijoke Obioha, in Singapore for drug trafficking.
The 35-year-old footballer was said to have gone to the Asian country for trials when he was caught trafficking in hard drugs on April 9, 2007.
Consequently, he was sentenced to death about four years ago and remained on the death row until he was executed yesterday.

Multiple blasts hit Maiduguri, Nigeria yesterday

In what appears to be a recurring incident of late, suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers yesterday caused the death of six persons, injuring many more in multiple bomb blasts within Maiduguri metropolis in the early hours of the day.
The Borno State Police Commissioner, Demian Chukwu, who confirmed the incident, said the six people, including four suspected suicide bombers, were killed in the blasts, which rocked the metropolis between 4.10am and 7.40am, killing two members of Civilian JTF at their duty posts at Muna Garage on Dikwa Road.

A Saudi policeman was shot dead Saturday in the kingdom’s Shiite-populated east, the interior ministry said.
The officer was hit by gunfire from “an unknown source” as he got out of his car in a neighbourhood northwest of the city of Dammam, said a ministry spokesman quoted by the official SPA news agency.

Islamic State killed seven Sunni tribal fighters who support the Iraqi government and five policemen on Saturday in a town south of Mosul, the insurgents' last major city stronghold in Iraq, local security sources said.
The tribal fighters and police were gunned down at two fake checkpoints set up by the insurgents in Shirqat, a Sunni town between Mosul and Baghdad, they said.

Volkswagen to cut 30,000 jobs at VW brand by 2020

The turnaround plan announced on Friday will lead to 3.7 billion euros ($3.9 billion) in annual efficiency gains and lift the VW brand's operating margin to 4 percent by 2020, from an expected 2 percent this year.





Volkswagen and its powerful labor unions agreed to cut 30,000 jobs at the core VW brand in exchange for avoiding forced redundancies in Germany until 2025, a compromise which leaves the carmaker's profitability still lagging rivals.
That target still remains below rival European carmakers such as Renault and Peugeot Citroen , which are targeting an operating margin of 6 percent in 2021.
