There was confusion at Oke Baale area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital, as some policemen allegedly opened fire on some students of the Osun State University while playing football on Saturday morning.

As many as 236 people may have been killed in the botched Nigerian air strike against Boko Haram that hit a camp for civilians displaced by the unrest, a local official told AFP on Saturday.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Friday had said the death toll from Tuesday’s strike on the town of Rann in the far northeast had risen to 90, although it claimed that could climb as high as 170.

Nigerian troops have killed 15 members of the Boko Haram terrorists, who were part of insurgents responsible for Tuesday’s mistaken deployment of rockets by the Nigerian Air Force in Rann, Borno State.
They also captured one terrorist, suspected to be a foreigner.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, confirmed the killing and capture of the terrorists in Rann on Friday, when he paid an operational visit to troops of 3 Batallion, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Sixteen people have died after a bus carrying schoolchildren smashed into a motorway barrier and burst into flames in Italy, police have confirmed.
The impact of the crash was so severe some people were thrown from the vehicle and killed.
Other badly burned bodies were pulled from the wreckage, police said.

'Half a million' women protest against Donald Trump in Washington

Up to half a million women are expected to join a protest in Washington against Donald Trump's presidency, after an estimated 100,000 people gathered in London.
Organisers of the Women's March on Washington said in a mission statement that participants were "hurting and scared" as Mr Trump began his term in the White House.
Messages on signs included "The future is female" and "Less fear more love".

President of The Gambia, Adama Barrow on Saturday said he was returning to his country following Yahya Jammeh’s announcement to step down as president.
Barrow on his twitter handle, @adama_barrow, said “As Yahya Jammeh officially stepped down from office — I will be returning to my homeland, the Republic of The Gambia. #NewGambia.”

President Donald Trump directed government agencies on Friday to freeze regulations and take steps to weaken Obamacare, using his first hours in the White House to make good on a campaign promise to start dismantling his predecessor's healthcare law.
Heading into the Oval Office shortly after the conclusion of his inaugural parade, Trump signed an order on the Affordable Care Act that urged government departments to "waive, defer, grant exemptions from, or delay the implementation" of provisions that imposed fiscal burdens on states, companies or individuals.

An explosion in a busy vegetable market killed at least 21 people on Saturday in Pakistan's remote northwestern tribal region, an official said.
About 40 others were wounded in the blast in Kurram region, near the border with Afghanistan, said Sajid Hussain Turi, member of the National Assembly from the region.

The U.S. Senate confirmed the first two members of President Donald Trump's cabinet on Friday, voting overwhelmingly to approve two retired four-star Marine generals as his secretaries of defense and homeland security hours after Trump was sworn in as commander-in-chief.
The Senate voted 98-1 to confirm James Mattis to lead the Pentagon, and 88-11 to confirm John Kelly for homeland security, a sprawling department responsible for everything from domestic antiterrorism to border security and disaster prevention.

Former Nigerian High Commissioner to Australia, Ambassador Adegboyega Ariyo, has expressed optimism that the new United States President Donald Trump will help return the nation’s stolen funds stashed away in some Western countries.
Ariyo spoke yesterday as a guest speaker at Diplomatic Dialogue, an intellectual discourse organised by the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).

After all the threats and chest beating of the last few weeks, Gambian strongman Yahya Jammeh yesterday agreed to step down and leave the country, a spokesperson to President Adama Barrow said.
Barrow made the announcement on Twitter, after hours of talks aimed at persuading Jammeh to recognise the result of the presidential election.
West African nations led by Nigeria  have deployed troops in The Gambia threatening to drive him out of office by force.

Barack Obama has said goodbye to supporters in Washington DC and revealed he is taking a holiday after handing over power to newly-inaugurated US President Donald Trump.
Mr Obama and his family were escorted by President Trump and Vice President Pence to the east steps of Capitol Hill, where they departed US Congress in a helicopter.
Former vice president Joe Biden and his family, who were also escorted by Mr Trump and Mr Pence, were taken away in a motorcade.

Donald Trump reveals plan for missile defence system

Donald Trump has announced plans to develop a missile defence system to protect the US against attacks from Iran and North Korea.
Within minutes of his inauguration as US President, Mr Trump's administration said it would develop a "state of the art" system.
It did not provide details on whether the missile defence system would differ from those already under development, how much it would cost or how it would be paid for.

A man suspected of planning a bomb attack in Vienna has been arrested by special forces, Austrian media has reported.
The Austrian authorities had been warned about a possible attack by foreign intelligence services, a Vienna police spokesman, Thomas Keiblinger, told news agency APA.
He said: "There were growing indications of a planned attack in the capital in the past few days."

Black-clad demonstrators have smashed shop and car windows in Washington DC ahead of the inauguration of Donald Trump.
Police in riot gear have attempted to keep groups of protesters lining the route of the presidential parade apart, with video showing people wearing black hoods running through streets in the capital and overturning bins.

Ten people have been found alive in the Italian hotel which was buried in an avalanche on Wednesday, say rescuers.
Fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari said: "They are alive and we are talking to them."
