Tragedy as four children among eight dead after explosion at ski resort, Poland

Four children are among eight people who have died after a gas explosion at a ski resort in Poland.

The victims, believed to be from two families, were found among the rubble of a three-storey building that collapsed because of the blast in the mountain town of Szczyrk on Wednesday.

Authorities said about 200 people, including fire crews and police, have taken part in rescue efforts, with heavy machinery being used to sift through the wreckage.
Regional firefighters' chief Jacek Kleszczewski told reporters: "It is a very difficult operation, I don't remember such a high number of casualties in a gas explosion."
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fatal explosion, although a local gas firm has suggested it was probably the fault of a hole drilled into an installation at the site.
Officials have said the search operation - carried out in sub-zero temperatures - will have to be scaled down later on Thursday because of "very difficult" conditions.
Local governor Jaroslaw Wieczorek said: "The rescue is being carried out in very difficult conditions, in hostile weather and in smoke from the debris.
"Most of the work is being done by hand in order not to destabilise anything or hurt anyone."
No further bodies are expected to be found at the scene of the blast, which witnesses said shattered window panes in other nearby homes and could be heard clearly by residents.
Gas services were cut off for a large part of the town, located in the south of the country, for safety reasons.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has offered his condolences to the relatives of the victims.
